Because I live in Santa Fe and eat locally as much as possible. And it's nice to have a conversation with the woman who shoveled my potatoes the day before. Healthy. It's like church for me, when the farmers hand you something they have spend months growing. What a gift! What an offering! What life!

Featured on a recent PBS documentary as one of the best, the Santa Fe Farmer's Market is truly a happy place. On Saturday mornings, it's where you meet the town: neighbors and friends, tourists and visitors, kids, dogs, musicians, artisans and, of course, the wonderful Northern New Mexican organic farmers who bring their abundance to this wonderful venue.
In late summer/fall, the aroma of roasting chiles is in the air, sunflowers are everywhere and die-hard high-desert gardeners are searching for the perfect perennial to plant before the first snow.
I can't think of a better way to spend a couple of hours every week, not only supporting slow food and responsible sustainable organic farming ... but having a great time too!

Our farmer's market and the SFFarmersMarket Institute
support farmers and help sustain Northern New Mexico's
traditions and agriculture by educating, helping out
financially and the market is a treasure, year round,
providing locally grown produce and products which
bring eating to the highest level for all of us lucky
enough to live here. Our market is a bounty in spite
of the challenges our farmers face each day at high altitude and in a land where water is scarce! Our
market is the jewel of our community and a gathering
place for all. I moved here from California because
there is this market in Santa Fe! I love this market and all the wonderful, hardworking farmers and their
cultures which are truly unique to New Mexico!

Santa Fe Farmers Market is not only one of the most vibrant and varied farmers markets I've ever visited (I've lived in Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, and Seattle, so I know great markets) but its story is inextricably linked with the agricultural story of northern New Mexico. Through numerous public programs, from food stamps and Farm to Table to microloans for local farmers and its successful fund raising for a new building in the Railyard, this farmers market leads the way on Clean Food and Community.

Like Santa Fe itself, the farmers' market is unique. It brings gorgeous and tasty produce, sustainably-raised meat, lovely locally-grown plants and flowers - things you can't find anyplace else. It helps support local traditional farmers and newer organic farmers. Musicians serenade us and provide dancing music, depending on the genre. It fosters community by prompting a wide cross section of Santa Feans to gather there every Saturday and (to a lesser extent) every Tuesday.
