It was a very dry and hot summer. The quality of our CSA bags started out very nice. Then the quality went downhill. The vegetables started rotting before they had been in my house and several other CSA shareholders' homes before they had been inside our homes 4 hours. We are CSA shareholders who are very glad that we tried it for one summer, but after considering everything, we've decided that , perhaps, we are not CSA people. We would like to give the extremely hot and dry weather part of the reason that we would not join another CSA again. We also missed going to the local farmers markets to see what was also available. We all missed not having green beans for most of the summer. We think that we prefer other vegetables more than Swiss Chard, Bok Choy, and eggplants which were in our bags many weeks. We (I'm writing for several other shareholders plus myself) sincerely hope that the weather conditions were why we were disappointed. At the end of the season, we all decided that we preferred other vegetables that were not in our weekly bags and that is our primary reason for not signing up again for any CSAs in the future.

There is no question that this area had a severe drought this summer. The following is taken from NBC12.com: "Our 10 days with a temperature of 100 degrees or more set a record. Also, we had a record-setting 37 days with a 95 degree or higher reading. And a remarkable 71 days with a high temperature of 90 degrees or above. At the same time it got hot and a severe drought formed. June and July were the driest on record and the summer as a whole was the third driest on record." After more than three months of scorching heat and little rainfall, many farmers are reporting moderate to heavy losses as it comes time to reap what was sown in the spring. "A very hot, early summer ... that will just zap everything out of the ground," I run a 3rd party CSA and throughout the summer I was not able to find a single local farmer that was able to salvage their green bean crop. I was only able to have them because one farmer in Hanover had a few. I know that Charlie, Marion, & their children have worked hard throughout the years to provide top quality produce for our community. Part of taking on a "shared risk" is taking on the consequences of a drought (worst in history), as well as benefiting from seasons of abundance. I would not dismiss being part of a Community, Supporting our local farmers in providing Agriculture for a reason that nobody had control over. As far as missing going to local Farmers Markets, why? Being part of a CSA isn't meant to supply ALL your fresh fruit & vegetable needs. I work with 15 different local farmers and still love supporting my local farmers market!

Our family has been getting weekly fruits and (mostly) vegetables from The Maloneys for 3 years now and we absolutely love the quality of the food and the fact that we are invited to the farm annually to see where our food grows. The fact that they use organic practices is a bonus for our family as we try to eat healthily and food grown close to home. What a gem we have in DaySpring!
