I don't know if this market has gone downhill or i just learned more. Last year there were rumors that were quickly confirmed that a vendor had been posting ...lets say racially insensitive to be as nice as possible. Anyway, a vendor was posting basically a bunch of conspiracy stuff on an account linked to their farm. It's a small community of locals , many of us were really upset about the content and that this behavior was not just tolerated but defended.
I tried to go to the market this year, despite the offensive vendoe returned. It just was hard to support the management. I found I can purchase from ACTUALLY LOCAL farms easily outside the market. This way the farm makes more profit...they pay a decent amount just to set up at the market. And many of the vendors are as offended as us regular customers at the management decisions.
One thing they should do is limit the range...most markets consider 75-100miles local...they extend to 150 miles. Sorry, but that's not local to me.

I shopped here every weekend I was in town during college, and am sad it has become such an uncomfortable place for so many. The issue is really in management. First, probably my second year shopping, I started to hear that the market was kind of hard for vendors to get into...that the market ran on the kind of "good old boy" system that means only friends are invited. The complaints I heard were that this meant that already marginalized farmers were not welcome. Of course, with 2020 came a lot of awareness of these issues. Then it became a concern to many that one of their vendors was spreading anti-semetic and racist propoganda through social media they used to manage their farm. The farm just deleted everything like it did not happen, and the market managers did as well. Well, it must be nice to be able to ignore racism and keep going, what a nice pri ledge! After Jan 6th you would think they would be more concerned...but nope, the bigots sell their still. I shop here no longer!

What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning. I can buy all of my food necessities, some wonderful skincare, sweet smelling flowers/herbs, and delicious treats fresh from local farmers and artizans. I can't express enough how friendly and helpful all of the vendors are. I feel good about being a locavore, and this farmer's market makes it happen.
Give it a try! You won't be disappoionted.

It has such a happy atmosphere with so much on offer through the delicious produce, baked goods, herbs, plants, entertainment and so many other goodies. It is also a great way to bump into friends and acquaintances, bringing the community together. We love to support our local farmers - they are good folk and we want to keep them!

It is a great organic market. They insist the items are grown in WV. The vendors are friendly and have great stuff. Jimmy has things like lemon thyme and all three types of holy basil. His rainbow tomatoes are the best tomatoes I have every eaten. You can always find him by his big green truck.
Amy has the best zuccini bread and I don't even like squash. She also has great banana nut cakes.
Then there is "the scone man". He bakes them fresh on Sun morning and brings them to market. You have to get there early cause he sells out fast.
It is only there on Sun mornings but is well worth the wait.

I'm really sorry for your experience, but much of the information you shared is not accurate. I participate in several markets in the greater DC area and the Shepherdstown Farmers market is by far the least expensive market for the vendors in the area, It is also by far the most "local". Most come from the eastern panhandle and none more than 35 miles. We are just 5 miles up the road. Not sure what racially insensitive information you are referring to, but I did hear rumors about someone innocently posting about a "frog" that they later learned was considered to be "racist". When they learned, they immediately removed the post - but were viciously attached by certain members of the community who were determined to try and destroy them. Regardless, you are free to not shop from any vendor you choose, but that certainly isn't a reason to boycott the whole market. We are mostly just local farmers trying our best to feed our community with healthy local food. You'd be hard pressed to find a more authentic local market anywhere.
