Shepherdstown Farm Market I

By: ada Smyhe (May 25, 2021)
I shopped here every weekend I was in town during college, and am sad it has become such an uncomfortable place for so many. The issue is really in management. First, probably my second year shopping, I started to hear that the market was kind of hard for vendors to get into...that the market ran on the kind of "good old boy" system that means only friends are invited. The complaints I heard were that this meant that already marginalized farmers were not welcome. Of course, with 2020 came a lot of awareness of these issues. Then it became a concern to many that one of their vendors was spreading anti-semetic and racist propoganda through social media they used to manage their farm. The farm just deleted everything like it did not happen, and the market managers did as well. Well, it must be nice to be able to ignore racism and keep going, what a nice pri ledge! After Jan 6th you would think they would be more concerned...but nope, the bigots sell their still. I shop here no longer!
