Winterhaven Wildflowers is an Indiana native plant nursery and preserve on more than 13 acres in rural Tippecanoe County. Farmed for generations, much of the property is being restored to natural areas, including a wildlife habitat funded in part by a Department of Natural Resources grant., now in its fourth year. "Sown wild, grown wild" is not only our slogan but the reality for thousands of prairie grasses and forbs growing in an area being restored to their natural habitat. Walking trails take visitors through the monarch meadow, where three varieties of milkweed are host to developing monarch butterfly larvae. Stands of solidago - including solidago gigantea that grows up to 12 feet tall - wave in the breeze among brilliant purple ironweed, giant wild sunflowers and towering Indian grass. Birdwatchers, artists, photographers, school children, nature lovers and the nature deprived will enjoy an hour or a day at Winterhaven Wildflowers. Seasonal events will keep you close to the rhythm of the earth, and provide memorable experiences for you you, your friends and family. Spring and summer bring the "dig your own" wildflower experience. Or buy potted wildflowers and grasses native to Indiana. Some popular varieties of Midwest wildflowers also are available. Come back in the fall and participate in the annual wildflower seed harvest, or walk the trails to see the changes that have taken place since your last visit. Also in the fall, the gourd and pumpkin patch will offer families a fun place to come pick the perfect pumpkin or the funkiest gourd. Luffa sponges drying on the vine also will be a fun find. Winter at Winterhaven is a wonderland of dried seedheads waving in the breeze against a backdrop of faded grasses and snow-covered still life. Nature nights, storytelling concerts, bonfires and cookouts complete the offerings at Winterhaven Wildflowers, where nature is a complete experience.
