The Rabbit Lady raises mixed-breed meat rabbits, primarily crosses of Americans, New Zealands and Californians. The breeding animals and their nursing offspring are housed indoors due to safety concerns and receive Modesto Milling Organic Rabbit Feed, along with grass hay or fresh grass (depending on the season).
Once young rabbits are weaned, they are moved outdoors and into portable field shelters (or "tractors") on the pasture, where they are allowed to graze until they reach market size. These rabbits are moved daily to a fresh patch of pasture. While they do eat quite a bit of grass on the pasture, they continue to receive supplemental Modesto Milling Organic Rabbit Feed.
Willow trees (and, depending on the season, apple and pear trees) that grow on the farm provide chew sticks and toys for the rabbits.
The Rabbit Lady does not administer antibiotics, hormones, vaccines or coccidiostats to the meat rabbits and the rabbits receive only non-medicated feed. The farm relies on the animals' own immune systems, diatomaceous earth in the feed, a healthy diet, adequate ventilation and proper sanitation to maintain the health of the rabbits.
