CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.
CSA members invest in their local farm at the beginning of the year and receive for the length of the growing season a weekly share of foods that are exceptionally fresh, bursting with flavor, nutrient-dense, ethically-produced, and less expensive than at the farmers market. A CSA farm is insulated from risk and loss by the strength of support from its members; if a crop struggles or fails the loss is absorbed among the larger community, and the farm survives to grow again the following season. Likewise, when crops are plentiful, we all share in the bounty. A CSA membership fosters a strong connection with your food, the soil where it is grown, and the people who tend it.
In addition, working as a group allows a CSA to diversify a garden in a manner unavailable to most home gardeners and conventional farmers; we grow smaller amounts of more crops. We afforded the opportunity to experiment with rare, boutique and heirloom seeds. This not only ensures that there is a variety of tasty produce, but also promotes the biodiversity that we prize on the farm.
