The Kale Yard is an experiment in small-scale, intensive agriculture. A one-woman operation with sustainable, chemical free, permaculture-inspired practices, The Kale Yard raises compelling vegetables - especially lots of greens - and operates a seasonal edible plant nursery.
'Kale Yard' is an old Scottish phrase simply meaning 'kitchen garden.' The name reflects the goal of growing food in a way that is never far from the kitchen. Literally - all food grown at The Kale Yard is sold locally in the community - and figuratively - part of the journey to eating locally is to learn how to enjoy what is available to us. Just as important as growing healthy food is keeping alive traditional ways of cooking, preserving and eating.
The Kale Yard's mission is to serve as a model & inspiration for those who don't have a lot of land or money, but who would like to grow more of their own food and live more lightly on the planet.
