Kaly Hess and Brian Wirak, Montana natives, have been farming in Western Montana since 2009. We are a generation of farmers, who don't own land but have had the opportunity to lease established farms. This has allowed us to focus on our farming techniques without having to worry about acquiring land and equipment. This year we are leasing Common Ground Farm in Arlee. Common Ground is certified organic.
We both studied Agrocecology at Montana State University, which provided us with a strong background in agricultural science. This aids tremendously in understand the dynamics between plants and soil. We focus on growing high value and high yielding crops in a manner that incorporates ecological principles, through the use of living mulches, and conservation tillage.
In addition to running a small CSA we sell at the Clark Fork Farmers' Market (look for the yellow tent) and wholesale carrots, beets, cucumbers, salad mix, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers to the Western Montana Growers' Cooperative.
Our CSA will be colorful, diverse, delicious, and flexible. A community supported agriculture program is about eating seasonally. The spring will be filled with greens, brassicas and root crops. As the summer progresses so will the diversity and quantity of produce, late season crops such as tomatoes, peppers, cherry tomatoes, celery, eggplant and onions will be abundant. We hope that a farmers' market style pick-up will create abundant dialogue between the members and ourselves. We encourage feedback and love recipe sharing.
