The Red Stick Farmers Market is genuinely diverse in terms of food and vendors, accessible to anyone due to its location downtown, fresh, local, and truly important to Louisiana's health, economy and well-being. If you are what you eat, then I am proud to shop for my food at The Red Stick Farmers Market.

The Red Stick Farmers Market is more to me than simply a place to buy healthy local foods. It's a soothing experience. Nothing relieves stress and takes your mind off the work week better than biking with friends to the farmers market, finding an uncommon fruit or dish to eat for lunch, talking to the vendors about what they love to grow, learning new ways to cook from the demonstrations, and seeing all of the positive energy radiate from everyone there. It is, without a doubt, the best way to spend a Saturday.

I find it amazing that i can keep the produce that i buy at the market for more than 2 weeks in the frig. The same produce from the supermarket would last less than a week. Also, i grew up with chicken feet being used in chicken soup and am so happy that i can buy them now at the market. And i have even used them alone to make stock! oh and what about the shrimp and the softshells and the stuffed crabs? they all make their way to my sons whenever i visit him out-of-state. and finally, i feel very, very happy that have made wonderful friends with the vendors. thank you all

Buying fresh produced from local farmers is the only way to go, without our farmers, we have nothing but manufactured food, farmers and their products are the heart of this country and it must live on.

Support of local farms is very important to me, and the Red Stick Farmers Market provides a venue for Louisiana growers to sell directly to the public. I like being able to ask the farmers questions about their produce, meats, goods, and getting knowledgeable, first hand information. I also enjoy the interior space with locally-owned eateries and crafts and the monthly extension of exterior arts and crafts to the market. I enjoy visiting the website and receiving news feeds with photos from the farms. I appreciate that when I go to Red Stick Farmers Market, I know where my food has been!

Because they sell fresh vegetables and fruit that are from local farmers, the bakery items are also locally made, the flowers locally grown. These vendors and farmers need our support so they can continue to provide us with their products.

Fresh, local and affordable. Shopping at the Red Stick Farmers Market not only allows me to buy fresh, locally grown produce, but also give back to our community. I love the all year outdoor atmosphere and the first of the month arts market which brings amazing local artists into the public eye.

Produce, artisan breads, milk, butter, flowers, ethnic foods, honey and bee products... the best because everything is fresh from the fields of south Louisiana and we know the farmers and how it is all grown and produced. It is said one should eat only that which is produced/grown within a hundred miles radius.

We LOVE the Red Stick market because we are able to personally support local farmers, producers, and artisans. We know that our dollars go directly to building their industries instead of to far-away corporations. We also love that the produce is FRESH, delicious, and beautiful, and often less expensive than supermarket prices. We LOVE it!

They offer many types of local produce, plants, prepared foods and samples galore. What is so great is that they have farmers from all over the central, southeast region. My only complaint is that they no longer allow pets outdoors at the farmer's market. Baton Rouge needs to work on becoming more pet-friendly.

Huge selection of everything - from grass-fed beef to all kinds of herbs; "coming home" feeling - lots of great people willing to talk at length to you about their industry and, specifically, their product; always fresh, excellent location - can get really great breakfast and coffee before looking around the market; free parking; once a month they combine it with an art/craft sale; always run into happy people.

Local fresh produce as well as an opportunity to be with folks who live nearby during a wonderful way to shop for proper food. Oh, and it's NOT
expensive or does it have all the stuff large markets have with mass production of -- who knows from where -- etc.

It's the one time of week when a large portion of the community acutally makes it out to gather, mill around and get to know one another. Not to mention the number of great artisans who show their art along side the fresh produce.

If you're new to Baton Rouge, or have just never tried the Farmer's Market each Saturday -- do! The produce, fresh-baked goods, Smith's creamery dairy products are fantastic. The arts/crafts market accompanies the produce market on the first Saturday of each month. They have some very cool art and merchandise. I do miss seeing some pooches at the market, but I read int the paper that it is a public ordinance to prohibit all (but assisted living) animals in public food areas. If it softens the blow, it's a law -- not just the whim of some cranky person.
P.S. - If you'd like some local honey, I recently purchased some delectable honey online from the Local Harvest site. The Baton Rouge based "Golden Delight Honey" should open a booth at the market! YUM!!!

I live downtown and went to the Farmers' Market EVERY weekend and spent at least $50. I love the vendors and the whole idea of the market. It's the management that turned me off. Specifically, a particular woman with blonde hair , whose name I don't know, had been regularly offensive. I had one interaction with her and I observed several interactions with others. I don't know how she got the job but it would seem that a person whose job involved dealing with the public, vendors and volunteers would have "people" skills. She did not. The market certainly doesn't miss my presence or my pennies, but I don't miss her sour, power-driven personality.

As a recent transplant to the BR area, I really enjoyed the Red Stick farmers market every Saturday morning. The produce was always fresh and the people were always nice. I always took my dog w/ me who enjoyed the people also. Many many people asked if they could pet him and then would tell me thank you afterwards.
This past Saturday I was informed that my dog is no longer welcome at the Market. I am extremely disappointed w/ the Market's decision to do this. My pup is all of 9 pounds and had the worlds best personality. I was informed of a few incidents w/ pets, which I can appreciate. The pet owner has a responsibility for their animal but that is also true of parents who should make sure it's okay before allow a child to run up to any animal. There was also a report of an elderly person who tripped and injured herself. Again, both parties have a responsibility.
I have had my toes run over by a stroller and cart on more than one occasion and it hurt but a simple apology with a hope that the parent / shopper would be a bit more careful in the future was enough to suffice. I never asked the Red Stick Market to ban children or strollers.
I feel this is an excessive over-reaction. I told the managers of the market that I won't be returning until they welcome both me and my dog. I encourage other pet owners to do the same.

We are transplants to Louisiana by way of Memphis, TN & Altanta, GA and were regulars at their perspective markets. We loved the experience! Since we try and primarily rely on fresh and organic, most everything that we needed we were able to purchase. We were even able to buy our organic chicken (fresh). I've already cooked one of them, awesome flavor!
We are sold, we will be weekly regulars.

We go to this market about 2 or 3 times a month and are seldom disappointed. Our habit is to bring an ice chest, canvas shopping bags, and cash (though there's a nearby ATM for the forgetful). We always buy Smith milk, fresh flowers, and a variety of fresh veggies. Lately the only fruit available has been strawberries, but I'm hoping for peaches and other fruit later in the summer.
Beware, lots of people bring dogs, who are generally well-behaved but can certainly trip you up, especially when the market is crowded (which it always is, if the weather is good).

Food, flowers and fun. This market is a must do for the weekend visitor or for anyone who lives in the area. Fruits and veggies are fresh and in season. Vendors are available for info and to answer questions. Prices are often less than the grocery store. Conventional and organic produce is available. Check this out, bring a bag, because you will stock up.

Cathy Laufer again. I am a pet owner. I choose not to bring him to the market because it's an inconvenience for ME. I have brought him and he was a hit! I also use a motorized scooter and hopefully, I haven't run over any feet! My apologies if I have! I hope I'm not banned from the market because I pose any danger. Why can't the market use part of the parking lot next door?
