OUR HISTORY
The farm stand that customers see today; which includes the huge timber barn sitting amongst our 33 acres of growing fields, along with the 37,000 square foot greenhouse, - all began in 1884. Two visionary farmers, newly transplanted from Ireland; James Wilson and his brother-in-law George Reynolds, farmed 16 acres here in Lexington and loading their horse drawn wagon, transported their vegetables to Quincy Market in Boston.
Fast forward over 130 years and five generations: and you'll find that all five of the first vegetables grown here are still being harvested, and the beloved chickens at Wilson's are still in residence. (It's rumored that a few hens are 20th generation descendants from the original brooders.)
Today, this fifth generation of Wilsons, along with our extended families, and employees, uphold the tradition of hands-on family pride along with that unmistakable can-do New England spirit.
HOW WE GROW
Wilson Farm uses the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of growing. It combines science and experience to grow healthy crops and discourage weeds and pests. The University of Massachusetts introduced IPM in the mid-1970's, but four generations of Wilson farmers had already been using many of its practices. IPM incorporates all aspects of growing; soil enrichment, planting, irrigation and pest control. Keeping soil rich and healthy is the basis of growing great produce. Here at Wilson Farms we replenish our soil throughout the year by using a combination of manure and compost made from all the green waste produced on the farm. Our soil is healthier today than it was 50 years ago. Rich soil encourages quicker plant growth and that means plants are stronger and crops can be harvested sooner, giving weeds and pests less chance to interfere. If you would like more information on using IPM in your garden ask any of the Wilson Farm employees in the yard or nursery for help.
