Our Place Farm is a small family owned farm still in the start up phase. We began homesteading and rapidly grew. We now raise dairy goats, meat goats, Large Black Heritage Breed pigs, chickens, Heritage Breed turkeys, and more. We sell pork, beef, chicken, goat meat, goat milk, eggs, and handspun yarn at the farm. The handspun yarn is all natural fibers from local farms. In the spring we allow families to visit and bottle feed our baby goats and we also enjoy free-leasing our Alpine and other registered dairy goats to 4H kids to show at local fairs. Below is our story of how we started.

Our Place Farm is a small farm still in the start-up stage. It all began about 4 years ago, when James shattered his elbow and could no longer work construction. Not wanting him to be bored, Misty thought homesteading would keep him active without causing additional stress on the elbow. Along came our first milk goat and a few chickens. The goat produced more milk in a day than we could drink, so Misty put a sign in the front yard that said Goat Milk For Sale. James said no one in their right mind would voluntarily drink that and stated "If you can sell it, I'll milk it". And so it began.

Our milk customers came and soon we had several goats and they'd even buy some eggs. One asked if we would raise a pig for them as well. Another asked if we could raise some extra broilers and what about goat meat and lamb. We couldn't say no. And alas, we are what we are now. A growing farm growing faster than we can keep up with on a property we never intended to farm in this way.

But it has been fun - and never dull. Between the hard lessons of learning how to keep pigs behind fences, to the escape artist goats, and of course, chicken poop everywhere. But, it is what it is. Kids love our place and we've become involved with 4H. We free lease our goats and sheep to 4H kids who would like to show at the fairs; thus allowing for a fun project that also educates the next generation about farming.

Reflections, James of wondering how that one statement started all of this, and Misty on how she spent 12 years in college obtaining 4 degrees to now enjoying farming so much more than a fast track job away from home. Reflections, of what would have happened if we had said no to the requests instead of yes. And thoughts of where to go from here.
