Dutch Belted cattle are Heritage breed known for high milk fat content & meat.
DB one of our rare heritage breeds, are known for their high milk fat content and meat. The Dutch Belted are limited in number, however, we love the breed and will continue to raise them for both milk and meat. We pasture raise our cows- truly holistic grazing system. Our fields are rotated for hay and grazing. We rotate our cattle to fresh grass daily. We deploy multi-species grazing techniques and the animals' impact work in direct harmony with nature. We do not give hormones, antibiotics or other chemical treatments to our cows unless the life of the cow is in danger. If this happens, which it hasn't yet, the animal would be taken out of our milk production and/or not processed for meat and removed from our program.
Customer can join our Milk Share program and have access to raw milk, butter, cream, yogurt, and other raw dairy products.
Meat and Egg Layers
Heather White of Sapphire Farms thinks differently about raising chickens than most. On her family farm in the 1970s, they raised meat birds for maximum production to feed the family. Over the course of 30+ years, her way of raising birds has done a complete 360. First, the lovely weather in Virginia offers warm days and cool nights. While raising the birds in a shaded environment allowing unlimited access to the outdoors. They may move from shade to sun at any time. They are providing a very well-balanced diet. They may eat bugs; they may dig for worms and they have access to GMO-free feed. Our feed contains Corn, Roasted Soybeans, Oats, and Vitamins and Minerals. We never use Animal by Products, Synthetic Amino Acids, Antibiotics, Hormones, Preservatives, or GMO's. Most of our feed is raised here on the farm so we know what goes in our animals.
Heather's Chickens can lay under the tree, take a dust bath if they want and forage through the lush grass. Their freshwater is from a full-time yearly running spring which fills a tank that in turn fills their water. They are always under the watchful eye of the guardian livestock dogs.
When it is time to process our birds, this is done humanely, and every bird is processed under the watchful eye of Heather. When birds are completed, they are placed in a quick freezer for immediate freezing to lock in the freshness of the bird. No chlorinated water here. Birds are rinsed then packaged and frozen.
Eggs are collected several times a day to ensure freshness. They are packaged and place in a refrigerator to help keep them fresh. Raised heritage breeds such a buckeye, Rhode Island Reds and fun new breeds like the True Whitening that lay colored eggs.
Red Wattles
Bacon lovers- this is the breed for you! Our swine are raised in a pasture and woodland. This provides shade when needed and we plant root crops for our swine to dig up, keeping them busy looking for their food as they would in nature. Our feed contains Corn, Roasted Soybeans, Oats, and Vitamins and Minerals. We never use Animal by Products, Synthetic Amino Acids, Antibiotics, Hormones, Preservatives, or GMO's. The feed is totally Gluten-free. Most of our feed is raised here on the farm so we know what goes in our animals.
