Nourishing our community, building our soil, and restoring heritage breeds--these are the intentions of Red Shirt Farm, a small, diverse, family-owned farm in Lanesboro, Massachusetts in the heart of the Berkshires. We believe that real food is essential to health and that how food is produced truly matters. We raise vegetables without the use of pesticides or herbicides using methods that enhance the life of the soil and the nutrient density of the plants. Our pasture-raised animals are integral to the vitality of our farm. Heritage chickens, turkeys and pigs produce eggs and meat of unparalleled flavor and superior nutrition. The farm is a beautiful, relaxing place that offers an idyllic experience for the entire family.
Our animals are an essential component of our farm and our practices ensure the highest welfare standards. Our heritage pigs, chickens and turkeys are raised exclusively outdoors on pasture with supplemental nonGMO local feed. They thrive on exposure to sunshine and lush pasture and are allowed to satisfy their inherent need to scratch, root, run and wallow. We raise heritage breed animals that can naturally reproduce, thrive on pasture and grow at a normal slow growth rate. Slow growth means strong skeletal structure, normal organ development, more muscle and texture to the meat, more nutrient density and stronger immune systems--and more flavorful meat. Our Buckeye chickens and Standard Bronze turkeys are recognized by Slow Food in their Ark of Taste, a catalogue designed to preserve at-risk foods that are sustainably produced, unique in taste, and part of a distinct ecoregion.
Training the next generation of farmers in sustainable and regenerative practices is a primary interest of ours and we accept interns for 3 to 8-month immersive farm experiences.
