Brett and Anna having been growing produce together for three years and individually before that for a bunch more. In 2015 they moved their family of 5 (plus 2 cats and a Dog) to Brett's family's farm to take their growing skills to the next level and pursue their longtime dreams of market farming. Known locally as "The Powell Farm" Helianthus Farm is located just outside of Dodgeville in the beautiful driftless region of southwestern Wisconsin. Their children (Bennett, Lois and Jack) are the 5th generation to grow up on the farm... and baby Jack is named after his Great-Grandfather "Jack" Powell. The name Helianthus, is Latin for Sunflower, both Brett and Anna's favorite flower. You are sure to see Sunflowers while visiting the farm during the summer and they are also sold at the market stand in bouquets along with a few other flowers that they grow. Flowers are a beautiful addition to the farm and they are fun to grow, but produce is the main focus at Helianthus Farm. Fresh, beautiful, healthy and affordable fruits and vegetables occupy most of the space...and fungus! Yes, cultivated mushrooms are coming and will be ready for harvest in 2018 (maybe late this season). Pride is taken in everything they grow; from the heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, beets, lettuce, peas, beans, melons, corn, potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, zucchini, squash, various herbs, kale, radishes, and raspberries (and that's just to name a portion of what they have to offer). The big plans for the 2017 season include the addition of blueberries and strawberries, introducing Hugelkultur to the farm, cultivating mushrooms, and taking steps towards their future goal of winter production and of course offering CSA Memberships for the very first time. February and March are busy months for Brett and Anna, as this is when they begin starting seeds. The majority (about 95% in 2016) of the plants that they grow they start from seeds in their basement nursery and slowly transition them over the course of months to beautiful healthy plants that eventually get transplanted outside...and then eaten :-) Growing food really is a beautiful and amazing process, and Brett and Anna really love the hard work and the idea that they are providing good, local, healthy and affordable food to members of their community!
