Located on a gentle slope of farmland in Sombrillo, a village south of Espanola, the Khalsa Family Farms took on the challenge to regenerate neglected fields and an old apple orchard.
In 2018, we began construction of an 8,600 sq ft greenhouse, digging an underground climate battery that uses geothermal air movement to regulate seasonal temperatures. We now grow vegetables twelve months of the year, using sustainable practices, the highest environmental awareness, and modern technology. We take pride in caring and beautifying this land and sustain it for future generations, so it can continue to grow the most healthy and full-flavored produce. We use restorative and sustainable farming methods, planting only non-GMO organic seeds.
We steward a diverse and harmonious ecosystem by establishing healthy soil microbiome, composting, manure teas, and use worm castings. We utilize no chemicals, artificial fertilizers, or pesticides. We rotate crops, plant cover crops, and integrate sheet composting in some locations.
Our farming expansion is integrated with our climate care considerations. We are committed to becoming carbon neutral with our solar installations within 2020. That means that the greenhouse climate regulating systems, processing rooms, offices, and staff housing will also use solar power.
Throughout our construction process, we recycled materials and equipment acquired from friends and local businesses. We are always on the lookout for materials that can be creativity integrated into the farm development projects. We hold it an essential priority to reuse materials and generate zero waste.
