Kinnikinnick Farm is a 40 acre certified organic farm located in Northern Illinois, approximately 80 miles northwest of Chicago, near the Wisconsin border. David and Susan Cleverdon, transplanted Chicagoans, started the farm in 1994. They specialize in growing triple-washed salad greens, Italian cooking greens, heirloom tomatoes, beets, onions, basil, garlic, and squash. Several years ago they began to diversify the farm by adding livestock to their farming mix and now raise old-fashioned broiler chickens, heritage pigs, sheep, keep a laying flock of 275 hens, have 13 beehives, and milk a few goats. They sell to some of Chicagos best restaurants as well as at Chicagos Green City in the winter and the Evanston Farmers Markets year round. They also partner with First Slice Pie Cafe to make basil and arugula pestos with ingredients from the farm. Part of the proceeds goes to the First Slice program to feed Chicagos homeless. Kinnikinnick has become more than an organic farm; during the summer their large, family size Featherdown tents are a vacation destination for families who want to spend a weekend or a week on a working farm a 90-minute drive from Chicago.
