ECO City Farms is an urban teaching and learning farm in Prince George's County that grows great food, farms, and farmers in ways that protect, restore, and sustain the natural environment and the health of local communities. Working with area children, youth, and adults, ECO educates and trains the next generation of urban farmers, eaters, and environmental activists. We envision a just, vigorous, and sustainable food system in the Chesapeake foodshed with ample fertile soil, quality environments, ecological and cultural diversity, sustainable incomes for farmworkers, and access to nutritious, healthy food for all.
ECO is a place-based institution with farms that are deeply rooted in two working-class Port Towns communities. We work to address historic injustices while advancing inter-generational and multi-cultural collaboration and respect for all people, species and the environment we share. Our organization seeks to enhance food security through fresh food distribution, farming and nutrition education, and land access projects. Our work exists to create and model alternatives to environmentally-destructive and labor-exploitative conventional agriculture, transferring decision making power from corporate interests into the hands of families and communities.
ECO operates two farms in Edmonston and Bladensburg. The selection of our farm sites was highly intentional as a strategy for establishing nourishing produce, educational and economic opportunities, and a deeper connection to our shared earth directly in the neighborhoods most in need. Across both farms, we produce 75+ varieties of vegetables, herbs, and fruits. Prince George's County residents can take advantage of our year-round CSA programs, and our produce is also sold at Gateway Farmer's Market in Brentwood, MD.
We have spent over a decade partnering with local residents, schools, and governments to come up with creative solutions to food insecurity in the neighborhoods we serve. ECO's SEED2FEED Summer Youth Program works with over a dozen rising sophomores from the local Title-I high school each summer. Our Beginning Farmer Training Program and SARE Apprenticeship provide farming education to people at the beginning of their farming journey, while our Urban Farm Incubator is a shared-resource model and land access project for emerging farm businesses in Prince George's County. Since 2010, ECO has engaged more than 3,100 youth and adults on farm tours, trained more than 800 residents in nutrition and healthy eating, offered urban agriculture courses with Prince George’s Community College to more than 930 participants, employed more than 310 teens through Summer Youth programming, and worked alongside more than 2,050 volunteers in 15,100+ hours of service.
