We raise beef, pork, lamb, chickens, turkeys and egg layers on pasture by following rotational grazing practices. Our heritage berkshire pigs live on pasture in the spring, summer and fall until the conditions get to wet and cold any they begin to make to much mud. While staying warm and dry in the barn our pigs still have full access to the outdoors and good weather days. The pigs are deep bedded in wood chips, straw and waste hay that builds heat from decomposing that keep the pigs happy and warm even when we reach -30 temperatures. The berkshires are perfect for living on pasture and consume grasses, legumes, clovers, roots and all the pigs love to explore and eat and be able to live to the fullest extent of their life. The quality of meat is a reflection of natural heritage way of raising pigs on pasture. The rich red meat coupled with delicious deep marbling that is rich in flavor, taste and juiciness.
Our beef operation follows the rotational grazing practices to improve the quality of health to our soil while improving the grazing that will improve the quality of forage that will systematically improve the quality and health of the beef. Our soil improvement is a continuous project with continued cover crop seeding multiple variety of seed that offers beneficial forages for grazing and building soil structure while leaving behind organic plant matter to decompose and build topsoil.
All our poultry are rotational grazed and around 5 to 6 weeks of age are moved twice a day to fresh forage and bugs. The poultry quickly learn the routine of being moved twice a day and race towards being the first grasshoppers or other bugs and fresh grass. What is left behind when moved is a rich nitrogen manure and aerated soil that gross a deep green pasture and naturally encourages a buried seed bank to emerge a natural clover, trefoil, hairy vetch and other legumes and fescues.
The deep bedding and all manure are composted to build a deep and rich compost for our greenhouse and produce growing operations. While we rely on our livestock to naturally to spread their manure in the spring, summer and fall. We are sure to collect and compost all the manure that is collected in and around the barn to build deep, rich and organic compost that allows use to naturally grow produce through out the spring and fall. We are currently growing produce in 3 seasons and working on environmentally and economically being able to substantially grow produce in the winter months also.
