I bought the last split half available from September, 2014. The live weight was 205# and hanging weight only 107#. When the slaughtering fee ($18.75) and the processing at Gilbert Meat Locker ($80.62)were added, my total was $507.32. I haven't picked it up yet so don't know how many pounds of finished product I will get or if the taste is worth it but the final cost/pound is higher than I expected ($5-$7). Hopefully it is good that Polled Hereford is a well established beef breed and Farmer Brown has a closed herd. I don't know what to think about so many in our area selling South Poll breed or if the cost difference is worth it. Being grass fed since conception surely would be a good thing. Maybe being able to buy a 1/2 instead of a 1/4 would decrease the cost/pound somewhat and would give more processing options.
