I purchased a quarter from Farmer Brown Beef in September. This was my first time buying grass fed beef. I don't think I will ever buy any other kind again. Paul's prices were more than reasonable when compared to supermarkets that carry grass-fed beef. Paul is willing to spend time and explain everything to his customers. He is meticulous the way he takes care of his Herefords, and they are treated very humanely. The beef is delicious and a bargain, not to mention the health benefits of eating grass-fed beef. Thank you Paul for our beef! We will be returning customers!

I bought the last split half available from September, 2014. The live weight was 205# and hanging weight only 107#. When the slaughtering fee ($18.75) and the processing at Gilbert Meat Locker ($80.62)were added, my total was $507.32. I haven't picked it up yet so don't know how many pounds of finished product I will get or if the taste is worth it but the final cost/pound is higher than I expected ($5-$7). Hopefully it is good that Polled Hereford is a well established beef breed and Farmer Brown has a closed herd. I don't know what to think about so many in our area selling South Poll breed or if the cost difference is worth it. Being grass fed since conception surely would be a good thing. Maybe being able to buy a 1/2 instead of a 1/4 would decrease the cost/pound somewhat and would give more processing options.

I just bought a 1/2 beef from a neighbor who now raises 100% grass finished black Angus mix (not South Poll) and got 228 1/2# packaged weight for $804 plus $230.30 processing or $4.53/#, almost 3 1/2 times as much beef as from Farmer Brown's 1/4 beef.

Farmer Brown Beef charged me $1.99/# on live weight, 205#, which came to $407.95 plus $18.75 slaughter fee. With $80.62 processing fee the total came to $507.32 for 65.5# of beef plus 2.5# of dog bones. So the cost/# was $7.45/# for everything or $7.74/# for just the beef (not counting dog bones).

Your meat was 4.74 a lb. Taxes included I assume. Divide 5??.00 by 107 lbs.

Picked up my 1/4 beef today--a total of 68# including 2 1/2# of dog bones for a total cost/pound of $7.45/# or $7.74/# if you don't count the dog bones. I don't know about grocery stores but I recently bought grass fed beef at Lucky's in Columbia, MO from Teton Waters Ranch in Colorado for $6/#. Maybe the taste will be worth it. I'm just disappointed that the hanging weight was only 52% of the live weight and finished (wrapped) weight was only 33% of live weight.

I am sure you will find this was a bargain. When comparison shopping, Paul was the best deal, hands down and the beef is delicious! You won't be disappointed.

The title is "A Little Caution" which has a negative connotation. I believe this customer would have been better served buying standard commercial grain fed beef. Nothing, in my opinion, is written that should warrant caution about this local, 100% grass fed, hormone free, antibiotic free, sustainably raised rotationally grazed beef. The live weight price on this beef is actually lower than current prices at the auction barn. The final out the door price per pound is much less than at Whole Foods and other health food stores. She may have been looking for custom cut beef at a price near those found at Walmart. I'm trying to hold the line on cost for my loyal customers. This first time customer also made special requests from the butcher which were not possible such as making bacon from beef. I believe this customer may not have fully understood the premium product that she was purchasing.

I purchased a half-beef from Paul (Farmer Brown). He was great to work with and the whole process worked well. I just sent a deposit in the mail and he contacted me when the meat had been taken to the processor. I contacted the processor and let him know how to cut it. Don't pay extra for the vacuum packing because he does a very thorough plastic wrap under the paper. He marks each package so you know what is in the package. I simply gave the processor in Clinton MO, "Remer Meats" two checks - one for Paul and one for the processing (about $150 for processing the half). The meat is excellent tasting and surprisingly tender. I would have expected grass fed to be tougher meat than normal grain finished beef but it hasn't turned out that way. I highly recommend Farmer Brown Beef. I think you'll be as pleased as we have been.

Although I didn't visit the farm, Paul spent time with me on the phone answering all my questions. This is the first time I've bought bulk beef, and my expectations were exceeded. Our local grocer carries frozen grass-fed beef, but some of it is grain finished, not pastured. Farmer Brown's is far better tasting and more tender. So far, I've used various roasts and ground beef. The processor is 2 hrs from Columbia, but the drive was worth it. Just threw the beef into a couple coolers and it had not thawed at all by the time I got it home. I couldn't ask for a better product.
