Katchkie Farm / Great Performances

Katchkie Farm is a year-round organic farming operation owned by Great Performances. An industry first, Katchkie Farm represents commitment to celebrating local flavors while supporting sustainable agriculture and good earth practices. Katchkie sits on 60 acres in Columbia County, NY, yielding its first harvest in 2007. Farm Manager Bob Walker transformed the never-before-farmed property, building the essential infrastructure.

Katchkie supplies Great Performances with fresh produce for special events, as well as three farmers markets throughout New York and GP's six cafes. It is the source for a line of artisanal products including the acclaimed Katchkie Ketchup, Thunder Pickles, and Bob-B-Q Sauce. As a unique resource to GP, the Farm is the inspiration for the company's precedent-setting 100 Mile Menu for which all principal ingredients are sourced from within a 100-mile radius of New York City.

The Farm is also home to The Sylvia Center, an educational nonprofit that introduces children to the pleasures and benefits of healthful food through farm visits and cooking workshops. The Sylvia Center also runs New York City cooking workshops in at their Hudson Square kitchen and in local schools. Katchkie Farm's philanthropic role further includes committing 5% of its annual harvest to anti-hunger organizations, notably City Harvest and Yorkville Common Pantry. The Farm hosts numerous public events throughout the year and participates in a Manhattan CSA.

Great Performances brings consummate culinary skill and originality to the table, complemented by personalized attention to detail and exquisite service. The company, founded in 1979 by Liz Neumark as a staffing service for women in the arts, is now an acknowledged leader in the high-profile events arena and has carved out a niche as the foodservice partner of some of the city's most prestigious cultural institutions including Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center; Brooklyn Academy of Music; Sotheby's; Apollo Theater; and El Museo del Barrio. In 2007, Great Performances, in a joint venture with Delaware North Companies, signed a 25-year lease to operate and manage the Grand Ballroom of the newly renovated Plaza Hotel. Great Performances is the only catering company nationally to own and operate its own organic farm, Katchkie Farm in Columbia County, New York. The Company pioneered the 100-Mile Menu (www.100milemenu.com) bringing sustainable food to the forefront of the special events industry.
