Naturally Better Beef!
(Stryker, Ohio)

Fall on R Farm

Another summer has come and gone, with the Williams County Fair providing a wonderful wrap-up to the season. Morgan earned grand champion pygmy goat and first in her beef feeder class. She also did well in showmanship with both animals, and we are proud of all the hard work she put into this year’s projects.

The fields are full of activity. Soybean harvest and fall tillage are progressing nicely, and all of our fall wheat has been planted.

Our beef cow herd is expanding, with all of our cows re-bred for next year. The dairy steer barn is full and will continue to supply our customers with natural freezer beef.

As the leaves start to fall and the nights get cool, we are reminded that Thanksgiving will soon be here. We are thankful for God and His goodness and wish each of you a blessed Thanksgiving.

Spring on R Farm

R Farm is alive with the sights and sounds of spring! Our first spring beef calves have arrived from our small herd, and the ongoing dairy calf rotation continues. We’ve selected this year’s 4-H projects, which include pygmy and dairy goats, as well as a beef feeder calf.

On the crop side, we’re awaiting delivery of seed corn and seed beans, including the non-GMO seed corn we grow for our feed. Machinery preparation is complete, and we just need a window of opportunity for spring fieldwork and planting.

As we reflect with gratitude, we feel truly blessed to care for these animals and the land. We are grateful for the opportunity to provide healthy, quality products for our customers and thank you for your continued support of our family farm!

Summer on R Farm

Fourth of July has come and gone, the corn is way past knee-high, and wheat has been harvested. It feels good to have all the bales either hauled out or in the mow.

August puts us about a month away from the Williams County Fair. Our youngest daughter will be showing two beef projects, and we can't wait to cheer her on.

Although we officially have a few more weeks of summer, preparations for fall will be underway soon. Harvest is a busy time on the farm, and we're looking forward to reaping what we've sown.

Harvest Time on R Farm

For our farming family, harvest time is about more than combines in the fields. It's a collection of sights, sounds and smells that signal the beginning of another chapter--one celebrating and giving thanks for the bounty that comes through hard work and caring for the land.

For our beef operation, harvest time includes cleaning and storing the non-GMO corn that we use for cattle feed. We also welcomed a new member to the herd, Rudy.

Mid-Spring on the Farm

The farm is alive with the sights and sounds of spring! All of the spring calves are here, and they're healthy and full of energy. They enjoy playing together, which provides quite a bit of entertainment for our family.

In the fields, the tile project is complete and planting is progressing nicely, including a section of non-GMO corn that will be used for cattle feed. Our next project is a pasture expansion, and that means adding fencing and planting a few acres for a hay crop.

Although the recent rains left things quite soggy, it's given us time to catch up on office work and prepare machinery so that it's ready to go when the ground is.

Life on R Farm: Late Winter/Early Spring

Even though the ground is covered in snow and the wind is chilling our bones, the feeling of renewal that accompanies spring is starting to set in on the farm. For the calving operation, it is evident in the baby calves starting on bottles and the beef cows that will soon be calving.

Once the snow melts and the ground is visible again, work in the fields will resume. There’s a field tile installation project to finish and ground that needs tilled and leveled. Corn and soybean seed will arrive soon for spring planting, and Doug and his brother have been busy prepping the farm equipment for the task.

Life on R Farm: The Winter Months

Harvest time has come and gone, and winter is upon us.

Doug's focus has been on hauling manure, finishing tillage and winterizing the farm's buildings and equipment. Now is also his time to research inputs and purchase next spring's crops. Record-keeping and office work, which Doug also enjoys, provide a welcomed respite from winter's snow and cold.

As a family, we are anticipating the late winter/early spring calving period for our small, but growing, herd.
