Bluegrass Farmers Market

I was talking to a friend who shops at a local farmers market in Illinois. The conversation headed in the direction of “what is local?” How do you define “local?” I thought about it and decided that “local” to me means that my fruits and veggies have not been in an 18 wheeler traveling across country...they come from within Kentucky. But then you have to consider another important thing when thinking “local” and that is, did the vendor at the market really grow it? Hmmmmm, we discussed this and we both agreed that is why we shop at farmers markets...we expect the vendor to be the farmer! My friend has the choice of three different markets in her area, 2 small and one large. She said that she started shopping at the large one because everyone else did. She asked a farmer what type of beans he was selling and the answer she got made her decide to venture to the smaller market. Know what the farmer said? It's a green bean! We both got a giggle on that answer! Lol

If “local” means the same to you as it does to me...grown/produced in Kentucky by the person selling it, then you will feel right at home at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! We might be small, but we are a true farmers market in every way! And, to show our appreciation to our loyal customers, we are celebrating this Saturday!

It's that time of the year...schools are about to start again. But, that does not mean that farmers markets close! For some reason, it always seems like folks think that once the pools close, the kids go back to school and the weather cools off a bit, that the market closes. Far from the truth...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is still going strong! Heck, we are having a Customer Appreciation Day this Saturday at both markets! We'll be giving out a limited supply of market tote bags...a new size, so this is a new one folks. :)

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market needs to, once again, clarify something...we are not part of the Lexington Farmers Market. Yes, we are located in Lexington but that is about all that we have in common.

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market is a guaranteed 100% homegrown/produced market. All of the farms are inspected to assure our customers that they are buying nothing but homegrown or produced items from our members. Each and every farmer must have a GAP certificate...that means he/she has gone through Good Agricultural Practices training! And, each individual farmer must obtain a Kentucky Proud designation, not the whole market...each farm! Most importantly, we do not allow anything to be resold by our farmers!!! They must grow, raise, make, bake or produce what they sell. That is the difference between the Bluegrass Farmers' Market and the Lexington Farmers Market! We just needed to clarify this because it seems like many people think that our market is just an extension of the larger market that is at Cheapside, on Southland Dr., Broadway & Maxwell and the U.K. Campus...we are not! Our farmers have to farm and cannot attend markets five days a week!

We're not sure how much clearer we can be...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is truly a “farmers” market and not a festival! If you want homegrown goodness, guaranteed, then you want to shop at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. If you want to eat, greet friends, listen to music and hope that the purchase you make is homegrown, then you need to shop at one of the Lexington Farmers' Market five markets...just don't confuse it with the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I know that sounded pretty harsh but to be honest, our farmers are tired of trying to explain that we will not be at Southland on Sunday, we will not be at U.K. on Wednesday and no...we never sell downtown! Our farmers are working on their farms, doing what they love, before bringing their bounty to our Saturday markets and the afternoon markets at each location. Tuesday afternoon for the Richmond Rd. farmers and Thursday afternoon for the Willow Oak farmers is just about all that they can handle...they have to work on the farm the rest of the week. Hopefully they take one day to rest! :)

Now that we have cleared that up, let's concentrate on what will be available this week at Lexington's largest. Guaranteed 100% homegrown/produced farmers market...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market! Sorry, I just had to get that in one more time! Lol

Thursday at the Willow Oak location...according to Tom, there will be cucumbers, tomatoes, corn and other veggies, blueberries and fruit jam. I'll bet there will be plenty more! :)

Today is Thursday and that means the Willow Oak market will be open from 3 until 6. Here's the market report from Tom of Emnett Acres...he's the go to guy when it comes to the Willow Oak market location! :)

“Our market wares covered the full spectrum of cane fruits and blueberries from Caludis, as well as Judi's homemade preserves.

I will have a good supply of Jade snap beans.

Rejoicing will have both Blue Lake and Tema beans to compliment their tomatoes.

Clark will have plenty of squash varieties, including the usual Pattie Pan.

Kathy Claibourne (sp) will have both water melons as well as cantelope.

Jones can be counted on to provide half runner beans and a good supply of sweet corn.

Our Thursday market had very good traffic until the am sharp thunderstorm hit a little after four. I an Kit Blake will be there again next week, and anyone else who wants is very welcome to come and sell.

It's Thursday and that means the Willow Oak market will be open today from 3 until 6! I'm going to quote a portion of the information that I received from Tom Malone of Emnett Acres because he knows that location much better than I do. :)

This info is for the Willow Oak location only and it will give you an idea about what will be available today and on Saturday.

“Next Saturday I  (Emnett Acres) will have a new picking of Jade bush type green beans.  This will complement our varied supply of other veggies.

John Sherks's son, John Jr. will have a good selection of tomatoes, squash, sweet corn, etc.

Caludi's will have their always good selection of berries and home made preserves.

Vergil Clark can be counted on the provide a steady supply of tomatoes, squash, corn and greens.

Kathy Claibourne has flowers, zennias, to supplement her table of veggies

The Stivers brothers should have honey at their stand, as well as other items.

Jones farm can be counted on to provide a good quantity of sweet corn.

We will be marketing on Thurday, from 3 to 6 and Saturday from 9 to 2.”

I would like to add that I have been told that The Lemonaid Days stand will be returning to the Willow Oak location this Saturday. Stop by and refresh yourself with a glass of lemonade for a good cause!

Now, on to the Richmond Rd. location...

Kirby at Overman's BG Fruits & Vegetables will be bringing spaghetti squash, half runner beans, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers and more.

Ronnie Claiborne at Valley Oak Farm will be loaded with tomatoes, corn, blackberries, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, peppers, cantaloupes, green beans and much more.

Larry will be on hand to give you a sample of Larry Mac's beer cheese.

Drew and Karin with Herb'n Renewal will have their hand blended herb seasoning and homemade soaps.

Judy from Caludi's Fields will be bringing her wonderful fruit jams, blueberries, blackberries, cucumbers and tomatoes.

Billie and Walt from the Tomato Patch are sure to have a great selection of heirloom tomatoes.

Jane of the Jane's Garden, Flowers & Herb fame can be counted on to bring her wonderful, colorful flowers, freshly dug potatoes, four varieties of basil and maybe even some eggplant.

Look right next to Jane and you'll find Larry with his organically grown shallots, garlic, onions and hot peppers.

McMaine's Riverhaven Farm will be bringing Linda's home baked goodness...cakes, cookies, etc. and her wonderful pepper jams along with garden fresh goodies like Armenian cucumbers, okra, eggplant and Magda, Zephyr, Patty Pan squash varieties, tomatoes, etc.

John Shirk and his sons from Rejoicing Acres are coming from Science Hill, KY loaded down with tomatoes, peppers, green beans, corn, squash, zucchini, peppers, onions, eggs, etc.

Greeley Farms has expanded since James had his unfortunate incident, his wife and daughter have been a welcome addition to the market! The three of them will be bringing eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, potatoes and maybe even some mushrooms.

Josh, with Jones Produce will be bringing his Somerset grown corn, cantaloupes, potatoes, green beans, onions, green and ripe tomatoes, etc.

Good news, a little bird told me that Bill & Sue with Green Garden on Colby may be making their first appearance at the market this Saturday!

Bad news, Keith Green at Honey Dew Apiary called to say that he will not be at the market on Saturday...he's been asked to judge honey at the fair! Vicki with Botanica will not be at the market for at least the next 4 weeks...she is having some knee surgery and we wish her a speedy recovery.

Possible good news...Maybe the folks from Polsgrove Farm might be at the market. We want to congratulate the new grandparents!

And, the heat wave continues! We're very lucky that some of our members live in areas that have had some rain and others can irrigate, so you'll still be able to find all the homegrown goodness that you want at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Here's my list of “The” spectacular, wonderful, great, unbelievable, must have farm fresh goodness that will be available this Saturday...

The corn is great!

The cantaloupes are the “juice running to your elbows” good!

The squash and zucchini is wonderful...try grilling it!

Wow, the heat wave continues! The Saturday market went on despite a 103 temperature reading in Lexington. That is a YIKES in my book but the record number of farmers showed up with trucks loaded with homegrown summer goodness! The really great part is, the customers showed up too! And, their four legged pals got some relief at the Stivers Bros. hydration station. Thank you fellas for thinking about our customers “kids!” :)

I walked through the Richmond Rd. market and I could not believe my eyes. The colors of summer were plentiful! Red tomatoes, green zucchini, yellow squash, purple eggplant, white onions, orange peppers and blue flowers. It was truly a sight to behold! I really appreciated the colors when I got home and tasted the flavors...Oh My Gosh! The corn is as sweet as can be. The crisp snap sound as I “did” my mess of beans assured me that I was going to have nothing but the freshest available. The wonderful scent of the fresh cucumbers added to the sweet candy onion slices were amazing. I found myself just standing there enjoying the fabulous aromas coming from my kitchen and I hadn't even started to cook! You should have seen and heard me as I cut up the cantaloupe...no, maybe it was better that I did that alone! HaHa! BTW, the seasons first cantaloupes are to die for.

I don't want to forget our Willow Oak market because I am sure that they had the same wonderful goodness available, I just didn't happen to be there. I do know that a few farmers sell at both locations so I know you can enjoy the same tempting sensations that I did and probably some different goodies too! :)

By now, I am sure that you all get the picture...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market has the very best, guaranteed 100% homegrown or produced goodness in the area! When you are a homegrown market it takes awhile to catch up to the other markets, but the wait is well worth it...we guarantee it!

As folks say, the hazy, lazy days of summer have arrived! Except that our farmers are never lazy, no matter how hot and hazy it gets.
