WOW, do we have even more reasons to be proud of our 100% homegrown/produced little market! Two of our members got to celebrate this week and we'd like to pat them both on the back!

Coleman Stivers who sells at the Richmond Rd. location along with his brother Calloway, was the statewide winner in the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Farmers Market Entrepreneur Contest, which was part of the FFA state convention held in Lexington last week. He developed a portfolio of his business and went through an interview process during the contest which was judged by members of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Quite an accomplishment for such a young farmer! And, by the way...his prize money was $350! WTG Coleman!

The annual Beer Cheese Festival in Winchester gave another member of our market a reason to celebrate...Larry Mac's Beer Cheese won 1^st place in the commercial division! Good job Larry and Cheryl!

Okay, now on to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market happenings!

The report this week is going to seem a bit strange to our usual readers. I am combining both blogs and both market locations into one because I will be out of town and will not have any computer access. So, it's gonna seem like one big jumble of news for the whole week! I hope you can sort it out but if not...remember that both market locations will have nothing but homegrown goodness available! :)

Summer might not officially be here but I can tell you that the Bluegrass Farmers' Market sure looks like it has arrived!

Corn is in at the Richmond Rd. location!

Add that to the tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash, zucchini, onions, potatoes, green beans, asparagus, kale, Swiss chard, garlic,cabbage, beets and the summer berries...blueberries, raspberries and blackberries and you have one heck of “it's not quite summer, but it sure looks like it” market!

The Richmond Rd. market will also have plenty of beautiful cut flowers, hanging baskets, herb plants, homemade soaps, fruit and pepper jams, baked goods, honey lip and hand balms, herb seasoning, eggs, mushrooms, beer cheese and a crowd favorite...locust honey!

The Willow Oak location opened last week and from what I hear it was a great success. The farmers and customers alike were very pleased with the turnout. Here's the list of items that I have been told would be available this Saturday...

We hope everyone enjoyed our 2012 Market Grand Opening Day last Saturday. We had a great time and it was so much fun to see the shoppers with the Wildcat Blue market tote bags...all 500 of them! I wish you could see the big grin on my face! I am sooooo excited about the Saturday market. It's our 2012 Market Grand Opening Day and we hope all of our regular shoppers will be joined by a bunch of new customers. I think the 500 Wildcat Blue market totes that we are giving away will introduce some new folks to our 100% homegrown/produced farmers market. :)

You see, we are not a huge market, we do not offer entertainment or food booths, we do not have five markets a week (how do you farm if you are at the market?) nor will you be able to find corn in April! The Bluegrass Farmers' Market is just that...a farmers market and we don't claim to be anything but a true farmers market. If you are looking for honest to gosh homegrown and local, we can guarantee it because our farmers are inspected on a regular basis to ensure that they are growing, raising, making or baking what they sell. And, each farmer has attended and been certified in GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) training...we take farming seriously! One more thing...every farmer is Kentucky Proud, not just the whole market. We want our customers to know that when you shop at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market, you are truly supporting local growers and not people who might buy and resell. In other words, please do not confuse the Bluegrass Farmers' Market with the Lexington Farmers Market...we are the farmers market, they are the festival market! Both are good for Lexington, it just depends on what you are looking for when you shop outside the grocery store.

It's another red, white and blue weekend! Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember those men and women who have lost their lives while serving our country. We salute them with pride!

Memorial Day is also the unofficial beginning of summer and that means bbq's and picnics! It's a special weekend for the wonderful gals in all of our lives. It's Mother's Day! And, our farmers can help you make sure that your special lady has that big smile that she deserves. It might require a little work on your part but remember, she is worth it! :) Some suggestions...

Buy an herb plant...dig the hole and plant it for her so that she can prepare wonderfully seasoned meals for you! Take my word for it, mom loves making you smile!

Purchase a beautiful floral hanging basket...hang it and watch her smile every time she looks at it. :)

Add a new veggie plant to her garden...you plant it and remember to pluck that weed out when you visit!

Maybe your special gal doesn't have a garden and relies on our farmers to keep her supplied in fresh veggies and fruits...why not surprise her with a basket of homegrown goodness!

Okay, so you are going to take her out for dinner but you still need something special...how about a beautiful cut flower bouquet or an adorable gift basket filled with wonderful bath items or maybe something sweet to enjoy after dinner...home baked cookies or cakes!

Saturday is “D Day” in Kentucky! If you are privileged enough to live in this great Commonwealth of Kentucky, then you know exactly what I am talking about when I say “D Day”...it's Derby Day!!! That means fast horses, plenty of fresh Kentucky spring fruits, veggies and of course...mint for those juleps!

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market members will be celebrating the greatest two minutes in sports by bringing their own claim to fame...great homegrown fruits and veggies! Start your Derby Day off with some wonderful farm fresh eggs. Derby lunch would be wonderful if you included a crisp spring lettuce or mixed green salad with a vinaigrette made with fresh strawberries and award winning honey. It will soon be time to stand up and sing “My Old Kentucky Home” as the Derby contenders are led out onto the race track at Churchill Downs. Of course you'll be sipping an icy cold mint julep that has been flavored and adorned with beautiful Kentucky grown mint! Once the excitement of cashing in that winning ticket subsides, it's time for something fresh and light like a cold cucumber sandwich, steamed veggie platter with fresh asparagus or maybe just a slice of a wonderful home baked zucchini bread. It doesn't matter...it's Derby Day!
