Holy Basil (Krishna Tulsi)

Right now in seedling stage but getting bigger every day! Krishna Tulsi — also known as holy basil — is considered to be a sacred plant in Ayurveda because it has important uses as a medicinal herb. The purple-tinged Krishna Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) really make these plants stand out. Used in religious ceremonies as well as cooking, tulsi may have medicinal qualities similar to neem but it’s a smaller plant that’s easy to grow in a sunny window. Several studies indicate that holy basil contains bio-available antioxidants that help prevent damage from environmental toxins as well as enhanced wound healing. A recent clinical study on anxiety confirms the traditional use of tulsi as a calming tea. Other research indicates that tulsi may have immune-boosting properties. While tulsi can be used in recipes that call for basil, it has a slightly stronger taste. Most often, it’s used in a tea made pouring boiling water over two teaspoons of fresh tulsi leaves. Allow to cool and then strain off the tea before drinking. Add a bit of honey or your favorite sweetner to enhance .... up to you of course!

Garden Being Replanted & Pallet Project

Our garden is being re-worked/re-planted. Have a LOT of seedling sized tomatoes, loofas & other goodies. Have a lot of basil that is still pickable & great for adding to your meals. Lots of Estella Chaya leaves just waiting for picking & a home. Will it be yours? Pallets! Bet you were wondering what that had to do with a garden & plant business? Tons! My partner is busy making me a new desk after using some of the pallets to repair deck stairs. That's just two of his pallet projects @ the moment. He's working on plans for tables now; coffee tables, end tables, bookshelves & storage chests. Soon these handmade gems, made from re-purposed pallet wood, will be looking for a new home. Check back on our website or on here (Local Harvest) as they are completed.

It first begins with the burning of the sap that comes from pine trees. The sap is gooey and sticky and does has a strong smell. However, the sap is being used for its antiseptic qualities. Some people find relief from poison ivy using Pine Tar Soap. Iodine, and sulfur is also found in Pine Tar and is said to be very good for using on itches, infections and rashes. Just one of the many reasons many people swear by it. Lemon Verbena, Coconut and a touch of Lavender have been added to smooth out the strong smell of Pine Tar. Neem Oil comes from the Neem Tree which can grow quite large. Their leaves are also used to treat eczema and psoriasis to name a few but the oil derived comes from their olive-like fruit. It also contains compounds of nimbin, limonoids and quercetin which what give it the properties mentioned above. It is a dark greenish color that has a strong and earthy scent. Neem oil is highly sought after as a natural skin care regimen as it is high in anti-oxidants and carotenoids which help protect the skin from oxidative stress and damage. Tons of Aloe

Also we have tons of aloe! Come get your aloe! Did you know aloe is edible? It is! No idea what it tastes like tho. An FYI about this variety of aloe, these are Aloe maculata aka Aloe saponaria or soap aloe. The flower color on these are a pretty coral color (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/89/Aloe_saponaria_2.jpg). They're very close in appearance to the Aloe striata except for the edging on the Aloe striata is smoother & doesn't have the markings that the 'leaves' the Aloe maculata (Aloe saponaria) does. The gel from these plants is still very good usage - as a remedy for many medicinal properties like: Skin complaints, inflammation, respiratory system, muscular-skeletal system, poisoning, circulation and endocrine system diseases (see https://www.researchgate.net/publication/23151273_Therapeutic_uses_of_Aloe_L_Asphodelaceae_in_southern_Africa for more info).

Lots of plants this year

House Plants, Indian Borage** (Plectranthus Amboinicus, Cuban Oregano, French Thyme, Indian Mint are some of the other names for this plant), green beans, estrella chaya. Do have limas planted along with some other recently planted bush beans; wax roma & blue lake. They have flowers on them & should have beans on them in the next couple of weeks. Green beans coming in still. Those were also replanted to keep them coming in. Some tomatoes - getting a bit hot out right now & tomatoes tend to not do well in heat for fruiting. With no greenhouse right now, not much to be done there unfortunately. More coming soon! **https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=Plectranthus+amboinicus&sort=pubdate - it has multiple uses as a folk remedy around the world. Skin allergies are treated with a juice of the leaves. Leaf tea is used for coughs, sore throats and nasal congestion, as well as flatulence, indigestion and hiccups. Indian traditional medical recognizes the leaf as supporting healthy liver function. Sweetened leaf tea is given to children with colds.

The Garden Is Really Taking Off In ....

a very big way. There's flowers on the tomatoes. There's already several peppers that are ready to pick or were ready to pick & have been enjoyed already. This year we have several varieties of squash & cucumbers (including yellow), tomatoes, beans (bush and pole), estrella chaya. The chickens are getting bigger and bigger every day. Soon the oldest ones, who are 6 weeks old on Monday (May 20th), will be laying eggs for all to enjoy! The game hens will be laying a medium tinted egg while the buff cochins will lay a large darkish brown egg. The cochins, at this stage in life, look like little yellow cotton balls with legs and wings attached. LOL They're adorable. They're all adorable. I look forward to folks have some of our great food! When you stop by, be sure to ask about our soap. I carry several varieties of neem soap, neem baby oil & neem conditioner. Check back often to find out what's to come.
