We started farming in the spring of 2003 on a few rented acres in Manhattan, and we farmed there through the 2007 growing season. In 2008, we were fortunate enough to start working our own ground. Today, we sell to a 300 member summer CSA, a 100 member winter CSA, a year round 50 member Whole Farm CSA, several restaurants, the Community Food Coop, and the Bozeman winter market. While we have always grown our produce with an eye toward sustainability, in 2012 we certified our farm as organic with the Montana Dept of Ag. It sets an independently verified benchmark. After many years of dreaming and planning, we finalized the purchase of Rocky Creek Farm in October of 2017!
We have relied on crop rotation, cover crops, underseeding, beneficial insect attracting plants, and composted manure to maintain and improve soil fertility and tilth and manage plant pests and disease. In 2023, we'll have ~11 acres in vegetable and berry production, including 4 greenhouses and 4 mobile high tunnels to help with cold weather season extension and warm weather crop production in our cold microclimate on the rich bottomlands of Rocky Creek. Working with us in the field are (occasionally) our 18 year old son Zachary and 14 year old daughter Ania, four year round farm managers, several full and part time harvest crew, and working CSA members. Get in touch if you'd like to work the fields with us!
Vegetable sales typically start in late May and last through late winter with storage crop sales and winter hardy high tunnel greens. The summer CSA season is from mid June to early October, and the winter CSA is from mid October through mid January. Whole Farm CSA may be available on the first of February for a year, limited. We deliver to our wholesale accounts twice weekly in the colder months, 3x weekly in the summer.
The Farm Stand at Rocky Creek is open year round for farm goods, in April/May for seedlings, then vegetables, pork, chicken, and lamb, and you pick berries and apples through the summer and fall. Fall brings school tours and pumpkin patch with fresh cider and hay wagon rides. Dark side of the calendar is only Wednesdays noon to 6pm for market stand, but nordic skiing trails are open every day from mid December to April 1 or so!
If you are interested in taking part in your local foodshed, whether it be with our CSA or as a restaurant supporter, please get in touch with Matt & Jacy!
