Once the home of the Dunsmuir Community Hospital, Earth Heart Farm School's dream is to acquire the property we've been farming since 2009, put it into a conservation easement and restore the property to its former productivity and service while ushering in a quality of living formerly known by our family farmer predecessors and sensibility toward the Earth formerly practiced by our indigenous sisters and brothers.
The farm was formerly the homesite of Bob & Ginny Von Hein who, like the Nearings, lived off the land until Bob died at the age of 94 in 2009. The Von Heins' traded their Bay Area home for the land with Dr.Cornish in 1963.
The farm supplied all the food for the hospital until it was razed in the mid-50's: meat, eggs, fruit, veg & nuts, dairy and honey. The hospital was built from timber milled on the land. The farm is irrigated by gravity fed spring water.
Built on a hillside in the mountains of Northern California, the land was terraced and stone walls/stairways built in the early 1900's.
Wendy, a 59 year old Permaculture Designer, is the primary farmer. She has gathered a group of dedicated 20 and 30 something interns who help in exchange for Permaculture knowledge and produce.
Wendy is also the manager of the Dunsmuir Grower's Market, featured on this site.
