The Produce Project is an urban farm program within Capital District Community Gardens. In continuous year round operation (with the use of two High Tunnels) since 2009, The Produce Project is an organically grown vegetable business built in the heart of Troy, NY. Hiring students from Troy High School to work after school and on weekends, youth tend their crops from seed to harvest. They earn a stipend and take some of what they grow home to share with their families. Students farm using high tunnels - simple, unheated greenhouses - to grow produce throughout the school year. They sell their crops to local restaurants, The Saturday Delmar Farmers Market, and The Veggie Mobile (a program within CDCG that delivers low cost fruit and vegetables to food deserts throughout the Capital District.) While working with The Produce Project, students learn relevant job and leadership skills. They learn how to grow fresh vegetables while improving their health and the health of their community.
