Promise Land Farm is a ministry of Promise Inner-City Ministries.
Duncan & Elaine are long time residence of Troy, MO. The farm joins the backside of our grandparent's farm. Duncan's father George Prior, is a pastor of a local church and many of you will recognize Elaine from Hechler Hardware. We believe that everything rises and falls on relationships, first with God and then with each other. We are committed to building community.
Why a farm?
P.I.C.M. works with children and their families in the inner city of St. Louis. A child is full of dreams and hope for the future, but many inner city youth lose hope during their early teenage years. When a person is sustained by a system, there is a danger that their self-esteem and self-worth will be destroyed by that very same system.
P.I.C.M. offers youth life skill classes and very basic vocational training along with job application and job interviewing skills.
The farm is part of an effort to make the ministry self-sustaining and less of a burden to its supporters while building community.
The farm also offers opportunities for the youth to be an active participant in a small enterprise that is not only productive, but can be reproduced on any empty lot in their neighborhood.
An entrepreneurial spirit is developed by showing the youth that they can turn the most basic of skills into a micro-enterprise. Good produce can be marketed, or better yet, turned into a tasty casserole that can then be sold! A few scraps of wood can be made into a birdhouse that can then be sold through the CSA marketplace.
A hope for the future can be restored when one comes to believe that they are worthwhile and that they have something to contribute to society.
By supporting Promise Land you are supporting at-risk youth.
