We have beehives and are seeking ways to expand our honey production and the diversity and quantity of bees on the farm. The bees will also benefit from our 12 acres of established pollinator conservation project which includes 20 varieties of forbs, annuals and perennials. Each year we add new varieties of native pollinator mixes with an emphasis on Milkweeds, which are hosts for Monarch Butterflies, and Sunflowers, which provide some resistance to varroa mites that harm bees, as well as diversifying types of clover, milkweed, grasses and mints. In addition, we have have a few bat houses for natural pest control. We are part of the Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance which has a focus on culturally-relevant seeds. We also provide education and training on for planting for seed saving or seed farming. We have install a combined solar and wind generating system to provide power for our high tunnel micro-irrigation system and our bee house.

ATRUS BALLEW FARM is part of a historical African American rural community-- with a church, school, farmer and teacher cooperatives, businesses-- in Madison County KY that was established around 1800 when our enslaved ancestors were brought across the Appalachian Mountains from Virginia by way of Nigeria in West Africa. To care for this land near the mountains, fed by the Kentucky River watershed and nourished by soil heavily mineralized by limestone rock is a sacred and spiritual responsibility.
