this past fall was my first encounter with the Kellner farm.
Saw them advertise fresh turkeys for thanksgiving and decided to try one for the first time. Nancy was extremely helpful in getting me just the size turkey I needed. She also gave me helpful processing and roasting hints as well. The turkey turned out fabulous and delicious. Am betting their chickens must be just as good. Thought their farm looked really well cared for and animals looked well tended to. Nancy invited me to come back when the weather warmed up for a tour of the farm and to get co-op info. Am very interested in joining and getting in on the veggies and other goodies like eggs and such. A very good experience.

First of all, Nancy is great to work with and very helpful. I loved that she provided recipes with some of our produce. Not only did I try veggies that I hadn't eaten before, I enjoyed them more because I had proven recipes with which to prepare them. (Kohlrabi au gratin!)
Secondly, I found our produce to be delicious and very fresh. Everything was picked just before it was delivered. For example, my lettuce and spinach was always crunchy and crisp for well over a week; and I know that if I buy lettuce at the grocery store, I had better eat it within a few days or it will be slimy.
My only complaint has to do with the weather. We weren't able to receive all of the produce promised due to unseasonable weather at the end of the growing season. Nevertheless, Nancy gave us extra goodies with our produce whenever she had it available. Also, whenever I made a special trip to the farm to pick up some yummy honey and fresh eggs, she gave us something extra like jerusalem artichokes or a bag of mixed dried herbs.
I appreciate that Nancy and Tom and their family not only raise chemical-free veggies, but also raise their animals humanely. My son loves to visit just to watch the chickens in the yard. (I love to cook the chickens...so flavorful and juicy!)
Overall, I'm grateful that the Kellners provide such a vital service to norhteast Wisconsin.

I was very pleased with my eggs, chickens, and my turkey that I got. Nancy was so nice and answered any questions that I had. I plan on joining her CSA for the next growing season.

I was very excited to finally be able to take part in a CSA, and I spoke to Kellner BackAcre Garden a few times before deciding on this one. I bought a half-share.
Apparently I do not ask the right questions.
The produce is NOT packed in a box. It is left in a filthy walk-in cooler on the farm-you need to dig through terrible produce, which I can only assume is what didn't sell at the farmer's market, to try to find enough edible food for a salad for one.
This farm does not grow all of the produce listed on the website-which I only found out AFTER I paid in full, received sub-par produce for months (that I easily could have purchased at the grocery store for MUCH cheaper after all is said and done-even if I bought only organic), and finally requested a pro-rated refund. The answer was NO.
The claim is that all the money is used to start the seeds and plant them, etc.
You WILL NOT get eggs or fruit. You WILL, however, get to pay extra if you want eggs or if you want honey that is slopped into a jar.
Oh yeah-you'll also need to bring your own bags if you choose to pick up at the farm because there won't be any available.
I tried to give this farm the benefit of the doubt-even waiting until WELL into the growing season (July) before I asked for a refund.
It didn't work out for me.
I sincerely hope that this farm gets better because I believe that CSA'a are a very important part of the community-maybe even more so than Farmer's Markets. I would hate to see people become unwilling to join a CSA because of the few bad ones out there.

My mother had a huge garden - never thought twice about rinsing to get dirt and bugs off--much better than wondering how to clean chemicals off. Since none of us can control the weather, I believe patience reaps rewards, i.e., quantity and quality of produce has improved with the weather. Kellner chickens taste like I remember 40 years ago. I love that Nancy is proud and willing to show her customers the whole farm if they desire.

Look forward to my tasty Kellner CSA share every week of harvest season -- It tastes the way Mother Nature meant it to taste! Their eggs and chickens are also the best we've ever had.

It was my first year as a CSA member and I was happy with what I received. Yes, the season was cut short last year, due to drought conditions around the area. This year there is an irrigation system installed and ready to go, and will help when Mother Nature cannot. Being a farm that believes in not using chemicals, I did find a bug here and there, but nothing horrible like another reviewer stated! It is to be expected when you have more natural growing conditions, ask any home gardener. The veggies had wonderful flavor, not like the hothouse grown you buy at the store. I even received cut flowers a few weeks in my share, how wonderful! Kellner's is a work in progress and getting better all the time. I'm happy to support them:)

I was a member last season with a half share. The season ended about a month shorter than it was suppose to. The produce was packed in paper and plastic bags which were store in a non-working, outside refridgerator for at least two days. The produce was always dirty, bug ridden and sloppy. The portions were not even enough for one good meal. There was no fruit and the eggs were a seperate purchase. There were some nice herbs. There was less than half of the products given out that is advertised on the product list. This was not a certified farm even thought it was said they would be getting certified. Keep looking around and do your homework. I'm guessing all of the nice stuff went to the market even after the members paid in full. Pick a certified farm with more experience.

The responsibility that comes with purchasing a share is that you come to the drop-off site or pick up at the CSA when it's your designated pick up day. That's when the produce is at it's freshest -- often picked that very morning. Was a member last year and my produce was always GREAT, but then I picked up promptly, while the cooler space was still turned on for the day and a half designated. I would never expect someone to run energy to keep a late pick up share or two cool --some 3 or more days late! What I especially like about Kellners is that the share pickup days are different than the farm market days -- so no one gets "leftovers". Just don't understand the negative reviews I read here -- but then no one can please everyone, right? If you want cheap, questionably-grown produce from who-knows-where, there are plenty are farm market stands out there. My choice is locally grown, chemical-free, raised by the small hard-working farmer who takes pride in offering the best each week. Love my CSA!
