Red Oak Farm is taking a break for the 2018 season so that Farmer Nicole can take some maternity leave time. Stay tuned for updates about next season!
Red Oak Farm is an urban microfarm located in south central Elkhart, and we are excited to be entering our second growing season after a very bountiful 2016.
We are committed to ecological farming methods and inspired by the principles of permaculture. This includes minimal cultivation to keep soil life intact, while also adding large amounts of organic matter to build soil health and fertility; avoiding the use of all sprays, even those deemed organic since they, too, kill pollinators and other beneficial insects; choosing heirloom, open-pollinated seeds every time, avoiding not just GMO but also hybrid seeds; eliminating the use of fossil fuels; and exploring the ways these commitments ripple out into our wider community, trusting that reconnecting to land and place also supports reconnecting to self and other. We are committed to working towards a more just food and farming system, and doing this all with much play and beauty!
In addition to the CSA and farm stand, we have honeybees, work with local elementary school children, host workshops on wide-reaching topics including natural building, fermented foods, and canning, host regular community potlucks, concerts, yoga classes and more! The farm has been birthed out of the Prairie Wolf Collective co-housing cooperative, so we are in the heart of a vibrant community and neighborhood.
Farmer Nicole grew up on an Organic farm in Ontario, Canada, where she first started growing microgreens to sell to restaurants when she was in high school. Upon moving to Elkhart, she helped start Rise Up Farms, and was the CSA manager there for 5 years. She is very excited to be embarking on this newest farming endeavor!
