Alternative Roots Farm is a Certified Organic family farm and orchard, specializing in organic and heirloom apples, heirloom tomatoes and garlic. Our organic products are offered direct sales, farmers' market (Aug.-Oct.), direct sales and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Shares (Fall & Winter). We ARF organic apples are also available through Apple Shares and wholesale. Offering CSA to New Ulm and the surrounding communities.
The farm sits on 5 lovely acres in rural Madelia, Brown County. Our land supports vegetables, a young orchard, and pasture for our heritage hogs and laying hens. We specialize in heirloom produce, not just tomatoes but many other vegetable and apples too! The vegetables we grow include heirloom tomatoes and garlic, as well as many fall/winter storage crops (carrots, parsnips, onions, winter squash, etc.).
Our off-farm apple orchards are just outside of New Ulm and Lake Crystal. We began renovating the New Ulm orchard in 2012, bringing it back into production and good health. We began managing the Lake Crystal orchard in 2018, transitioning it to organic. Our home orchard is planted to apples, pears, plums, apricots and a peach tree! Currently we only have apples in production, as the young, grafted trees take a few years to start producing.
We continually work to manage and develop our farm-site incorporating wildlife habitat and conservation practices. Attracting wildlife promotes ecological biodiversity, strengthens our environment and aids in pest control.
Our chickens and pigs support the cycling of nutrients on our farm, as well adding to our joy and quality of life. The laying hens provide fresh eggs that are available year-round. We offer whole and half hogs each fall; the pigs are a BIG part of organic pest management at the orchard!
We are passionate about bringing fresh, nutritious, quality produce to our local community; as well as growing nutritious food in a way that is in harmony with nature and conservation-minded.
