Kerusso Farms was officially started in 2010 but we have been gardening organically, on our fertile land, since 2004. We built our home, started a garden and then acquired many farm animals such as, chickens, cows, ducks, pigs, horses, goats, cats, dogs and recently a ferret. We have been using sustainable farming practices from the beginning.
In 2011, we tried our hand at a small local farmers market, with good success, and so we plowed ahead with plans to go into farming full time. In 2012 the farm expanded into approximately 2 acres of vegetables, flash forward into 2014, we are planning on about 4 acres! This will include about 2 acres of produce as well as some storage crops specifically grown for raising chickens naturally. We are planting grains, corn, legumes, root crops and even squash for our egg & meat flock.
We now have settled on selling at a small private farmers market, in Grand Rapids, as well as selling from a market stand, here at the farm and our first ever CSA.
Our gardening practices include; using heirloom and open pollinated seeds, crop rotations, companion plantings, saving our own seeds, 5,000 + feet of raised beds, minimal or no tilling, integrated pest management, natural mulch vs. plastics etc. We feed our soil and our plants with compost, rock dust, organic kelp as well as alfalfa & sawdust. To date, we have never used any pesticides, herbicides or any other icky"cides" on the farm, not even Organic approved ones.
