Minka Farm is a high welfare farm using sustainable, earth-friendly practices to raise pastured Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World ducks for eggs & meat, AWA chickens for eggs & meat, AWA and Certified Grassfed by A Greener World beef, Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World pastured pork, pastured chevon (goat) and lamb, and orchard fruit. In 2007, we started farming this magnificent piece of Earth, deciding that a strong connection to the land and the example of a good work ethic are important for our family. We are constantly learning about how best to keep our soil healthy and our animals happy while we grow food for ourselves and our customers. Our products are often featured on the menus at Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe (Chapel Hill, NC), Panciuto Restaurant (Hillsborough, NC), Rose's Noodles, Dumplings & Sweets (Durham, NC) and Rumi's Persian Cafe in the Blue Dogwood Market (Chapel Hill, NC).
Our grassfed and grass finished, pastured beef herd is made up of Angus purebreds and Angus crossed with Senepol, Hereford and Gelbvieh breeds, selected for their ability to thrive on grass alone. The animals live on pasture year-round in their family unit. All of our cattle, except the bulls, are born and raised on our farm and do not receive antibiotics or hormones to speed their growth. Our beef is Halaal and now available by the cut or by the side. Visit our website for more details under Products: Beef.
Our duck eggs are produced by our flock of laying Khaki Campbell ducks. These eggs are delicious and can often be consumed by people who are allergic to chicken eggs. They are used like chicken eggs, but because they have larger yolks, they are richer and give baked goods an excellent flavor and texture. Our eggs are available through Weaver Street Markets and Whole Foods in the Raleigh/Cary/Chapel Hill area, in addition to sales directly from the farm.
Being certified by A Greener World means that our animals are raised with their natural behaviors as a top priority. We treat our animals with respect and strive to keep their lives stress free. You can read the standards we follow at www.agreenerworld.org.
Our 3-acre orchard produces wonderful PYO blueberries, muscadine grapes and apples, plus we-pick figs, persimmons, pears, Asian pears, jujubees, pawpaws and American Chestnuts. Each fruit has it's own season, so check our website to see what's available.
Minka Farm loves to teach! Contact us about grade school outings and homeschoolers. Our on-farm veterinarian, Kim, leads these tours and classes and can teach about many topics ranging from sustainable farming, veterinary care of farm animals in general, or specific information about any of the many species we have at Minka Farm. Contact us for pricing and to schedule your time. Kim is a BSA-approved merit badge counselor for Boy Scouts Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine merit badges as well.
