We believe that sustainability is essential to responsible stewardship. After all, if we do not preserve and nourish the land we work, we cannot sustain ourselves. But our goal is more than sustainability; we want our produce, animals, and land to thrive. We have found that maintaining a thriving farm culture can be a balancing act. For example, we strive to operate completely organically but there are times that slight deviation from organic methods is required to ensure sustainability. We make such balancing decisions with great forethought and care. Because some of our best farmland stretches alongside the Potomac River, the importance of sustainable farming rises to a level that takes increased awareness and attention. Steven Cox, chief farmer at Lost Corner, has dedicated much time and thought to the way he works in this sensitive area as reflected in his statement below. Likewise, his son Tyson has grown to appreciate the intricacies of the farm/environment relationship as he branches out into vineyard management and increased produce for local businesses, as well as the art of bee keeping.
