American Chinchilla rabbit
The original Chinchillas from Europe were rather small, so American breeders set out to produce a larger animal that would be better suited for meat and pelts. Through selective breeding for larger size, fine bones, and a good dress-out percentage, a breed standard was issued for the Heavyweight Chinchilla. It was a larger form of the Standard Chinchilla, with the same shape, color and genetic make-up. Though widely popular from the 1920s to the 1940s, today it is the rarest of the Chinchilla breeds. It is found only in the United States, with the largest concentration in the Midwest. According to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, the American Chinchilla is critically endangered.

Our small farm has grown out of a desire to bring fresh real food to people. Without the help of family or a bank for financial and moral support we decided that since we could not buy a farm we would rent land and turn it into a farm. Which is what we did. (more...)

We offer fresh vegetables and fruits grown on the farm. We have fresh and frozen rabbit meat for sale. We grow everything organically. We don't believe in Herbicide or pesticides. We only use organic fertilizer. We offer a large selection of vegetables not just 1 or 2 tomato varieties but at least 5+. (more...)
The Rare Hare Barn was founded in 2003, in response to our desire to find a higher quality meat product than was available in the stores. We wanted to have food that we could be assured of its quality. Our fryers are raised humanely and on grass whenever possible. They are fed a diet made from local grains custom made into pellets.
