Minka Farm is a young family farm using sustainable, earth-friendly practices to raise pastured Animal Welfare Approved ducks for eggs, Animal Welfare Approved beef certified by the American Grassfed Association, pastured pork, and orchard fruit. In 2007, we started farming this magnificent piece of Earth, deciding that a strong connection to the land and the example of a good work ethic are important for our family. We are constantly learning about how best to keep our soil healthy and our animals happy while we grow our products for ourselves and our customers.
Our 3-acre orchard produce wonderful peaches, plums, apples, figs, persimmons, pears, Asian pears, jujubees, blackberries, blueberries, pawpaws, grapes (muscadine and scuppernong) and American Chestnuts. We offer these fruits throughout the season (June - November) through our fruit CSA.
NEW! We are in the process of becoming a small scale local hatchery. We only hatch to order and do not mail our birds, so contact us if you are in our area and want to start or restock a backyard flock. We will hatch non-industrialized Rhode Island Reds and should be able to start filling orders in August 2014. Once we are up and running, we will apply for Animal Welfare Approved status. A grant from Animal Welfare Approved has provided us with the necessary equipment, but we unfortunately purchased diseased breeders in 2012 and have had to depopulate to allow complete elimination of this disease. We will be acquiring new birds in the spring of 2014 at which time we will join the NPIP and monitor for many of the more common poultry diseases so we can deliver clean and healthy birds to our customers.
We also have a flock of laying Khaki Campbell ducks. These eggs are delicious and can often be consumed by people who are allergic to chicken eggs. They are used like chicken eggs, but because they have larger yolks, they are richer and give baked goods an excellent flavor and texture. The Khaki Campbell breed was developed in England by Adele Campbell in the late 1800's (making it an heirloom breed as well) to lay throughout the year; although, in our experience, the ducks will stop laying for 2 months of the year to moult, or shed out old feathers and grow new ones. Our eggs are available through Weaver Street Markets and Whole Foods in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area.
Our grassfed, pastured beef herd is made up of Angus/Hereford/Gelbvieh purebreds and crosses. The animals live on pasture year-round with their entire herd. All of our cattle are born and raised on our farm and do not receive antibiotics or hormones to speed their growth. Our beef is halaal and now available in several ways - by the cut, half or quarter steer purchases, or CSA. Please email for a price list!
Being certified by Animal Welfare Approved means that our animals are raised with their natural behaviours as a top priority. We treat our animals with respect and strive to keep their lives stress free by always considering their natural behaviors (www.animalwelfareapproved.org).
Minka Farm loves to teach! Contact us about grade school outings and homeschoolers. Our on-farm veterinarian, Kim, leads these tours and classes and can teach about many topics ranging from sustainable farming, veterinary care of farm animals in general, or specific information about one species. Contact us for pricing and to schedule your time. Kim is a trained merit badge counselor for Boy Scouts Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine merit badges as well.
