As an open and transparent business that welcomes the public onto our farm, we are accountable for the impact that our farming practices have on our employees, customers, neighbors, livestock, wildlife, waterways, and land. To protect all of these stakeholders, we use regenerative agricultural practices, which reject toxic pesticides and seek to ally with nature, not dominate it.
Through regenerative farming, we're repairing our land, making efficient use of
limited resources, and protecting our community from exposure to chemical pollution. Because soil is the foundation of our farm's health, much of our attention is focused on nurturing a complex community of soil-borne life. We favor perennial crops in order to minimize the disruption of our soil and to protect it against erosion. We innovate ways to maximize our use of nature's resources, such as our swales, which use the slope of our hillside to capture rainwater and carry it to our apple trees.
Our farm is covered with diverse, symbiotic communities of plants that support one another with crucial ecosystem services, including nitrogen fixation, weed suppression, and pollinator attraction. By focusing on native plants and preserving the woodlands that surround our fields, we create habitat for native birds and wildlife. And we've integrated poultry and livestock into our fields and orchards where, through their innate desire to peck, scratch, graze, and poop,
they perform crucial roles in pest management, weed control, and fertilization.
We minimize waste and the purchase of off-farm inputs by recycling nutrients through composting and by making use of all parts of the plants and animals we raise. We recognize that disease and pests are signs of a system out of balance. Rather than attacking these symptoms with a war-like mentality, we work to bring our farm back into balance. This way of farming constantly improves the land while producing flavorful, nutrient-rich crops and proteins.
