Stone Gardens Farm is a diversified first generation family farm nestled within the White Hills of Shelton Connecticut. First starting out in 1998, with only a couple of acres of sweet corn and mixed vegetables sold on the front lawn of an old dairy farm, our farm has seen tremendous growth over the last 26 years. We currently grow 60 acres of mixed vegetables; raise a herd of 80+ beef cows, 20+ pigs, 500+ turkeys for the holidays, along with broiler chickens and laying hens. We now manage over 400 acres of farmland; none of which is preserved from development. We have been preserving it the old fashioned way, by keeping it profitable through active farming. Our harvest is sold through our farm market direct to the public; none is sold wholesale. We believe this method cuts out the middleman thus retaining the profits on farm.
We also offer USDA inspected meat processing of beef, pork, lamb, and goat. There are options for smoked meats and custom processing options as well, which include the previously listed meats and deer. Stone Gardens Farm Market will work with you to arrange to have your meat transported to local slaughterhouses that we are affiliated with, and then have the meat transported back to our farm for USDA inspected cutting and packaging. This ensures that all meats going through our farm are safe and are properly labeled and packaged.
While not an organic farm, we practice Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which basically means that we only spray crops when absolutely necessary, and after all other measures to save the crop have been implemented. If it is deemed necessary to spray, we target the exact problem and try to use the most environmentally-friendly pesticide or fungicide possible; we also rotate crops yearly, adding compost and manure to the fields every fall as well as planting cover crops to minimize the affect of any type of pesticide used.
"Our goal is to grow healthy plants without harming any beneficial insects, the soil, or ourselves," said Stacia Monahan of their growing practices. "We love being able to grow real food for real people. We raise our family in these fields, and we want you to feel comfortable doing the same."
Customers may purchase vegetables, meats, eggs, and more from Stone Gardens at their farm market, located at 40 Huntington St, Shelton CT, which operates daily year round.
