Mission Statement "To provide our neighbors, friends and family with top quality, healthy, and locally-produced basic essentials for life.” Local Food Definitions: Local food (also known as regional food, food patriotism or local food movement) is a "collaborative effort to build a more locally-based, self-reliant food economy-- one in which sustainable food production, processing, distribution, and consumption is integrated to enhance the economic, environmental and social health of a particular place." It is considered to be a part of the broader sustainability movement and the advancement of local purchasing and local economies, a preference to buy locally-produced goods and services. Those who prefer to eat locally grown/produced food, sometimes call themselves "localvores" or “locavores.” The five main components of the TempeFarmersMarket.com are: Component 1. We are featuring locally produced fruits, vegetables, artisan breads, olive oil, honey, eggs, meats, milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, and other food products. Our farm products will be predominately from local farmers using responsible farming methods. Our predominately locally-produced food products (hummus, chips, salsa, tamales, etc.) will be of the highest quality and regulated by the Arizona Department of Health. TempeFarmersMarket.com will help Arizona farmers and food producers by providing a marketplace and a daily access point to downtown Tempe community. TempeFarmersMarket.com is a non-corporate, local family-owned market that will fill a neglected niche within the downtown Tempe area. Component 2. We are committed to showcasing local artists, artisans and educators through art installations, demonstrations and readings. The juxtaposition of food and art in the market will create an environment of exploration and discovery that will foster a shared experience, resulting in clear sense of commonality and understanding within our diverse city. Our community is blessed with an abundance of neighbors and friends with incredible intellect and creativity, who are willing to share themselves and their experiences with others. Component 3. We are committed to host a series of educational workshops for adults and children. An adult lecture series is already scheduled, including topics such as architecture, archeology, and photographic arts. Our educational series for children will include hands-on experiences, such as traditional West African drumming, gardening, and ceramics. The goal of this educational component is to stimulate dialogue about the earth, community, and sustainability while increasing awareness and action on a grassroots level. Component 4. We will promote sustainability awareness through research, experimentation, and implementation of carbon footprint reduction theories utilizing technology, art, and action. Our community market business is willing to partner with local schools, colleges, non-profits, public and private enterprise by providing our building and business as a sustainability field-test location. Component 5. We have and will continue to accept financial support from local area businesses and groups. The community friendly businesses that support our vision for this community market will be rewarded through public awareness of their positive role within this local food project. Patrons of the market who want to help sustain the market can do so by letting our sponsors know that their support of TempeFarmersMarket.com is appreciated. Our business model is an active working sustainability experiment; we encourage everyone to participate, so our individual small efforts will make a big difference.
